Understanding Depression

Common Symptoms

If you are experiencing an episode of clinical depression, you may suffer from some or all of these symptoms:

  • Prolonged feelings of sadness, emptiness, or frustration
  • Thoughts around feeling guilty, worthless, or even hurting yourself
  • Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy
  • Fatigue or lack of energy, even after sleeping
  • Changes in appetite, or not feeling hungry at all
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Physical aches or stomach problems that don’t seem to improve
  • Slowing of speech or thinking

Causes

The exact cause of clinical depression can’t always be determined. But there are some factors that may contribute to how you’re feeling:

  • Genetics: If someone in your immediate family suffers from depression, it’s more likely you may develop it
  • Brain chemistry: An imbalance of certain brain neurotransmitters may contribute
  • Major stressful life events: Dealing with the death of a loved one, trauma, or divorce
  • Abuse or conflict: Physical, sexual or emotional abuse can make you more vulnerable
  • Other medical conditions: Major or chronic illnesses may trigger depression
  • Substances: Drug or alcohol use can cause depression

Medication Management

Research has shown that there is benefit to therapy and medication for some patients with depression, whereas others will be able to benefit from therapy alone.

If medication is recommended to reduce symptoms and improve your mood, your therapist will work with our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) to prescribe an appropriate medication as part of a unique program that works for you.
