Understanding ADHD

Common Symptoms

There are three main types of ADHD that cause a variety of symptoms:

Inattentive ADHD:

  • Difficulty listening or pay attention
  • Difficulty staying focused on tasks
  • Trouble completing projects
  • Problems organizing and prioritizing
  • Easily distracted
  • Predisposed to losing things
Hyperactive/Impulsive ADHD:

  • Fidgeting
  • Difficulty staying seated
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty working in silence
  • Excessive or impulsive talking
  • Problems being patient or waiting

Combined ADHD is the most common subtype, which causes a combination of these symptoms, ranging from mild to severe.

Causes

It’s not exactly known what causes ADHD, but experts have determined certain traits that could contribute:

  • Genetics: ADHD runs in families, especially when one or both parents have the condition
  • Brain structure: if you’ve been diagnosed, you may have slight differences in the part of the brain that controls executive functions
  • Brain chemistry: those with ADHD may have an imbalance of certain brain neurotransmitters
