Relationship Issues

When you’re having problems with a relationship in your life, it can have a huge impact on everything else. Whether it’s with a close family member or your significant other, dealing with a negative dynamic can affect your overall emotional well-being and take a toll on other aspects of your life.

Think you may have relationship issues?

Individuals in abusive or conflict-ridden relationships are at a higher risk of developing mental health disorders.

Impaired family functioning is associated with parental mental illnesses like major depression, bipolar disorders, psychotic disorders, and anxiety disorders.

Understanding Anxiety

Common Symptoms

If you find yourself in a relationship that feels negative or toxic, it can make you feel drained and traumatized – emotionally, mentally, and physically. These unhealthy relationships usually involve behaviors from one or both people that are controlling, manipulative, or abusive, including:

  • Inflexibility or unwillingness to compromise
  • Constant criticism
  • Explosive anger
  • Isolation from other family or friends
  • Blaming and shaming
  • Possessiveness
  • Withholding affection or attention

Although they might not be abusive in a physical or sexual sense, toxic relationships can lead to anxiety or depression and can impact your ability to focus on other parts of your life.

Causes

Negative relationship dynamics can stem from a variety of causes. You or the other person might not even realize certain behaviors are detrimental to the relationship or are having a negative impact on the emotional well-being of one or both of you. Influencing factors could include:

  • Past personal experiences or trauma
  • Low self esteem
  • Fear of rejection
  • Lack of trust
  • Unhealthy coping mechanisms

Seeking out and understanding how and why these behaviors are happening is key to resolving them and improving your dynamic.
