A panic attack is a strong fear response that happens without a clear reason. It puts your body into “fight or flight” mode even though there’s no real danger. If you experience repeated and random panic attacks, you may have panic disorder.

Understanding Panic Disorder
Common Symptoms
Although a panic attack itself is not dangerous, it may involve physical symptoms so severe, it can feel like a heart attack. The episode usually lasts between five to 20 minutes and may include feelings like:
- Pounding or racing heartbeat
- Feeling faint
- Sweating or chills
- Nausea or a churning stomach
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Dizziness or shakiness
- Hot flashes
- Sense of losing control or even dying
People with panic disorder develop an intense fear around when attacks will happen and may avoid places where attacks have occurred in the past.
Causes
It’s not known exactly what causes the condition, but certain factors may be involved:
- Genetics: panic disorder can sometimes run in families
- Biology: the condition may be an overreaction of normal survival instincts in the brain
- Trauma/stress: it may result from a traumatic life experience like abuse or a serious accident
Panic attacks may also accompany other mental health conditions like anxiety or agoraphobia.
